What is a button down shirt
A button-down shirt is a shirt with small buttons on the collar points, so the collar stays neatly in place. The name says it all: the collar is buttoned down. The idea comes from polo, where players fastened their collar points so they wouldn't flap about.
How do you wear a button-down shirt?
A button-down is naturally a little less formal than a shirt with a kent or cutaway collar. That's down to the buttoned collar, but also because sturdier fabrics such as flannel, corduroy or heavier cottons are used more often. Wearing a tie works perfectly well, and it's even an American classic, but keep the tie a bit sturdier: fine silk against a thick flannel collar quickly looks out of balance. For a strictly formal occasion, reach for other shirts. That puts the button-down right between casual and formal, which makes it widely versatile.
