What is Sorona?
Sorona is the brand name of a fibre made largely from renewable plant-based raw materials, mainly corn. The fibre was developed by the chemical company DuPont and was placed with Covation Biomaterials in 2022. The biggest advantage is that production has a lower environmental impact than that of comparable fibres: water and energy are saved and fewer greenhouse gases are released.
What are the advantages of Sorona?
Besides that more sustainable production, Sorona has properties that make it comfortable to wear. The fibre feels silky soft and dries quickly, which makes it extremely suitable for sportswear, polo shirts and outdoor jackets. For producers, what counts most is the high tensile strength: Sorona is wear-resistant and holds its colour well, even after many washes and exposure to the sun. Because the fibre also does not crease or shrink easily, garments with Sorona are easy to care for.
Where do you come across Sorona?
You rarely find Sorona as the only fibre in a garment. Usually it is in a blend, for example with cotton or polyester, where it provides stretch and resilience without any elastane being involved. That is exactly why it is gaining popularity: it gives a garment stretch with a partly plant-based raw material. Check the care label to see how much Sorona there is in a garment.
